1 Month of No Shampoo or Conditioner

My lovely yoga teacher friend, Sunny Smith and I took a one month “No-Poo” Challenge! This means that we didn’t use store bought shampoo or conditioner at all for one month.

What did we use? We used baking soda for the shampoo and apple cider vinegar for the rinse / conditioner.

So, how’d it go?

We both loved it and had great results.

I guess the first “strange” thing that you need to get used to is that you don’t get bubbles and suds when you wash your hair. This is actually a good thing! What makes shampoo bubble is a chemical called Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS).

According to David Suzuki, depending on the manufacturing processes, sodium laureth sulfate may be contaminated with measurable amounts of ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, which are known human carcinogens. Ethylene oxide can also harm the nervous system and the California Environmental Protection Agency has classified it as a possible developmental toxicant based on evidence that it may interfere with human development.


As well, SLS can be very irritating to both the skin and hair because it strips both of their natural protective oils.

What else is in most store bought shampoos?


Parabens are potent chemicals used to preserve beauty products. Methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben are the most commonly used parabens.

Studies have shown that parabens mimic the female hormone, estrogen. They have been scientifically linked to the development of several forms of breast cancer. Other studies have shown that certain parabens adversely affect the secretion of testosterone and the function of the male reproductive system.

You are probably wondering how it was after I worked out and got all sweaty. It is totally fine. This No-Poo Method keeps the scalp clean (no itching) and the hair bouncy and clean.

Can you see how long my hair is getting?  I’m in desperate need of a hair cut, but I didn’t want to cut it during the challenge ‘cuz I wanted to see how long it would grow! Both Sunny’s hair and mine grew like weeds over the month!

So what’s my plan now? I’m going to continue with the No-Poo Method. I’m off to the hair-dresser this afternoon for a trim, so it’s going to be interesting when I tell my stylist not to wash my hair.

Do I ever plan to use store bought shampoo or conditioner again? Maybe, but if and when I do, I will most certainly purchase completely non-toxic products such as Dr. Bronner, or Rahua Shampoo, or Hugo Naturals…….. just to name a few. BUT, in the meantime, I am going to continue with the baking soda and apple cider vinegar!

    I tried it based on your recommendation and LOVED it! Did it four times in eight days. Then used Dr. Bronners today. I plan on no poo for about a week and then Dr. Bronners maybe once per week. Thanks for the great idea!
